How to Memorize Pi

For many of us, memorizing pi is just for ... FUN! To read about some interesting accounts of memorizing pi, be sure to peruse Ada's Reading List.

There are a number of strategies a piphilologian can use for memorizing the mathematical sequence of digits called pi. Some people like to use the audible rhythm, memorizing the 'sounds of pi'; very much like memorizing a song or poem. If you think this method will work for you, make sure you visit my Pi Songs and Poems page.

Another track, Ada thinks is a bit devious, is to use a 'Memory Chart'. Ada thinks, if you get this system working smoothly, you will impress many friends. If you think a MemoryChart is in your future, Ada suggest you visit www.ludism.org for a more detailed discussion.

If you're a visual person, there is another strategy that some of Ada's herd members use. They arrange the digits in blocks, memorizing the 'visual pi' (Create your own custom pattern here). This is a fun method because it illuminates all kinds of interesting patterns. There are even names for some of the more interesting sequences such as the Feynman Point, the set of six nines starting at digit 762. In fact, it's guaranteed that you can find any pattern you like in pi. Don't believe me? Use my pi practice page to search for any digit pattern you like. Your birthday? Phone number? They're all there somewhere in the never ending sequence of pi.
